Though married couples may share a physical space like a bed, that space grows more distant without actual physical intimacy. The cartoonishly long bed may seem like an overexaggeration, but it's meant to provoke a sense of reflection on the relational strain that comes when intimacy is removed. Each couple is positioned on polar opposite sides, and one can imagine the bed continuing to expand in width, pushing them farther and farther apart if no intimacy is fostered.
