At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found a way to creatively engage my friends online while also keeping my art skills in tune. I challenged friends and followers to submit popular characters that I could "reimagine" in my own artistic style. The predominant thread was taking historically "cartoonish" characters like Mulan, the Iron Giant, and Uncle Iroh, and giving them a sense of weathered grit. What would they actually look like as a real person? Each character's personality is evoked through expression and backdrop. For Iroh, you can imagine the deep chuckle about to belt out of a jovial, wily old man. For more actual human characters, such as Indiana Jones or Tiger King, almost the opposite was outlined. What would Joe Exotic or Harrison Ford look like boiled down to their fictitious essence? A combination of part-realism, part-exaggeration allows the viewer to discover both the essence of the character and how I would've imagined each one.
