GIOVANI
It's not often you get an intimate, up-close window into a master craftsman in his studio. While wandering the streets of a small Italian town, I stumbled upon an artist with one of the most unique processes I've ever seen. Taking ancient olive trees sadly infected with a new invasive disease, Giovanni transforms the cores into meticulously crafted works of art. The proceeds of the art pieces then goes back to the farmers whose livelihoods have been deeply impacted by the tree infestation. Rather than focusing on the finished product, I captured Gionvanni in the midst of his process. As Giovanni himself is not an ostentatious man, I removed any staging from the equation and positioned myself as a fly on the wall in this modest yet inspiring workshop.
